Work is one of the key areas of interests of professional, public social policy from its beginnings. Although many of the current in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries labour market issues have been resolved, progressive changes bring new challenges. High unemployment rate, new forms of employment, wages, demands towards employees, social security for the employed, labour migration are just some of the issues that need to be undertaken by the contemporary social policy. The introductory chapter is an attempt to outline the major issues and challenges in the labour market faced by contemporary societies.
