Abstract:
The presented study is an introduction and a commentary on Justinian the Great’s Novel 85. In the first chapter, the Author concisely portrayed the nature of the manufacture of arms in the Roman state. The second chapter concerns the workers at state arm’s factories, that is, the so-called fabricenses. In the third chapter, the Author analysed the complicated issue of supervision over state arm’s factories. The fourth chapter is committed to interdiction of the collection of weapons by private individuals which originated from lex Iulia de vi publica, as well as restrictions on weapons’ usage. Chapter five deals with the prohibition on selling weapons to Barbaricum. In the sixth chapter the Author translated and analysed Justinian the Great’s Novel 85, by which the emperor introduced for the first time in the history of the Roman Empire the state monopoly for production and distribution of weapons. In the summary, a further history of fabricae and fabricenses is briefly presented, along with the main changes in the field of production and distribution of arms after Justinian’s death.

Niniejsze opracowanie jest wprowadzeniem i komentarzem do 85 noweli Justyniana Wielkiego. W rozdziale pierwszym Autor przedstawił zwięźle kwestię produkcji broni w państwie rzymskim. Rozdział drugi dotyczy tzw. fabricenses, czyli pracowników państwowych warsztatów zbrojeniowych. W rozdziale trzecim Autor zajął się skomplikowanym problemem nadzoru nad warsztatami zbrojeniowymi. Rozdział czwarty poświęcił wynikającemu z lex Iulia de vi publica zakazowi gromadzenia broni przez osoby prywatne, a także ograniczeniom w używaniu broni. Rozdział piąty dotyczy zakazu sprzedaży broni do Barbaricum. W szóstym, najważniejszym rozdziale tej pracy, Autor przetłumaczył i omówił 85 nowelę Justyniana, w której cesarz wprowadził, po raz pierwszy w dziejach imperium rzymskiego, państwowy monopol na produkcję i dystrybucję broni. W zakończeniu ukazane zostały zwięźle dalsze losy fabricae i fabricenses, a także podstawowe zmiany w zakresie produkcji i dystrybucji broni w okresie po śmierci Justyniana.
